Foot care for people with diabetes.

Foot complications are common in people with diabetes. Ulcers often become infected and, if not treated promptly, can result in sepsis and gangrene requiring amputation. The specialised nursing intervention in this study varied according to the assessed risk. Patients with diabetic neuropathy received treatment every six months. This comprised toenail cutting, trimming of trichophytic nail with a grinder, removal of keratinised layers of callus with a corn-cutter and grinding of the surface of the callus.
